Richmond, Va. -- Two Recruiting Station Richmond Marines were greeted with awe as they walked into a first grade classroom at Miles Jones Elementary School in Richmond, Va. April 28.
The Marines took part in the school’s career day and used the opportunity to educate the children about what it is to be a Marine.
This marked the 14th year the elementary school invited professionals of various backgrounds, specialties and industries into the school to inspire the children.
“We want to let the children know that one day, they can be just like you,” said Amanda Thornton, the school’s counselor.
The Marines took the chance to educate the children about patriotism and service to country.
“It gave us an opportunity to let them know what they need to do if they want to join the military in the future,” said Staff Sgt. Bruce White, a recruiter from Recruiting Substation Richmond Main and Richmond, Va. native.
For the children, the advice was to do well in school, stay out of trouble, and stay in shape. Advice parents and teachers are sure to appreciate.
“It was an honor to be able to talk to the children, and help mold the minds of the future of our nation,” said Staff Sgt. Jessica Clark, a recruiter from RSS Richmond South and native of Vista, Calif.
The Marines also answered questions about the ribbons and badges on their uniforms, and told stories of their time in the Corps, enjoying a few laughs with the children.
For the children, it was an opportunity to learn and interact with people they may not normally get an opportunity to be around to include Marines, police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers and several other professions.
