Maj. Benjamin F. Sutphen

Maj. Sutphen was commissioned a second lieutenant in May 2010 at the United States Naval Academy. Upon completion of The Basic School and Infantry Officers Course, he was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines in Camp Pendleton, California. 
 
While serving in 1st Battalion, 4th Marines from 2011 to 2014, Lt. Sutphen served as weapons platoon commander and combined anti-armor team platoon commander.  During this time, he deployed on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and then on a subsequent deployment as part of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit. 
 
Capt. Sutphen executed orders to Marine Corps Recruiting Command, Quantico, Virginia where he served as the operations officer for Officer Programs and then as the Aide-de-Camp from 2014 to 2017. 
 
Capt. Sutphen graduated Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico, Virginia in 2018.  After graduation, he immediately reported to 2d Battalion, 1st Marines and took command of Company G where he deployed with the battalion as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.  After returning from deployment in 2019, Capt. Sutphen assumed the duties of the battalion operations officer and was promoted to Major.  He deployed with the battalion as the Ground Combat Element for Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response Central Command where the unit supported Operation Inherent Resolve and took part in Operation Allies Refuge. 
 
Maj. Sutphen is a native of Averill Park, New York.  He holds his Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from the United States Naval Academy.
