Staff Sgt Lance K. Harvey, originally from Vermontville, Mich., was meritoriously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant Jan. 2 at the Recruiting Station Louisville headquarters.

Harvey, the staff non-commissioned officer in charge of Recruiting Sub-station Frankfort, won a Marine Corps Recruiting Command meritorious selection board and was selected for promotion after outperforming his peers based on his recruiting statistics, physical fitness test scores and various other metrics.

After serving as a UH-1 and AH-1 helicopter airframes mechanic for five years, Harvey reenlisted to get orders on recruiting duty.

“I had the highest qualifications that I could get in my job, and the quickest way to get promoted was to come out here,” he said.

His secret to success came from his work ethic and his willingness to help out others in need.

“He has always been a team player,” said Sgt. Michael Dunn, Recruiter at RSS Frankfort. “If the RSS ever needed anything beyond what he was missioned for the month, he was always there to give more.”

“I treated every day like I was on a zero,” Harvey said, a term used to describe having zero contract attainment for the month. “Even though recruiting is an independent duty, it is a team effort and it is essential for us to help each other out.”

Harvey contributes a factor in his successful win of RS Louisville recruiter of the quarter twice to the friendly competition amongst his peers.

For instance, he competes against Sgt. Joe Sabel, NCOIC at RSS Louisville North, and RS Louisville Recruiter of the Year in fiscal Year 2013.

“Sgt. Sabel and I would take snapshots of the leaderboard and send them back and forth as we would overtake each other in the standing,” Harvey said.

More than anything else, Harvey said his family has been his motivation to excel.

“I could not do it by myself,” said Harvey. “My wife Jessica being so supportive was crucial to my success out here.”
